Ian Constance

CEO

Learn about Ian

Ian Constance joined the Advanced Propulsion Centre as CEO in September 2015. Prior to this Ian worked with Ford Motor Company in Detroit where he was most recently Global Chief Engineer for Large Cars. In that position he led the product development activities for the Ford Mondeo/Fusion and Ford Taurus. The role involved all elements of the product engineering, design, manufacturing readiness and business case development with a very keen focus on future customer needs. Working on these product lines gave Ian wide experience of developing and integrating HEV, PHEV and high tech Gasoline and Diesel internal combustion engines into global platforms.

Ian has held positions globally in the automotive industry with over 25 years’ experience. Prior to his time working in the US, he spent six years at Ford’s Asia Pacific HQ, first in Bangkok and then in Shanghai. During an unprecedented period of growth and change in that part of the world in the role of Director of Product Programs he was responsible for delivering many well-known Ford products into manufacturing plants, joint ventures and markets throughout the region.

Ian’s early career saw leadership roles developing the Ford Focus in vehicle platform engineering, powertrain planning and manufacturing engineering roles, as well as an assignment in production management. He gained engineering degree from Aston University, an MSc in Advanced Automotive Engineering from Loughborough University and is a chartered engineer.

Jon Beasley

Jon Beasley has more than 30 years experience in the motor industry working for multinational suppliers and on government and industry programmes.

Jon held various leadership roles within GKN including Group Technology Officer and Driveline Chief Engineer for Aston Martin, Daewoo, Ford Europe, Honda, JLR, Mazda and Volvo. He has worked overseas, establishing GKN’s driveshaft manufacturing operation in Thailand.

He was the Programme Director for the Transport Systems Catapult during the critical start-up phase.

At the APC Jon’s key focus is development and management of the projects funded through the competitions, bringing his technical experience of global product development.

Caroline McMillan-Browse

Caroline joined the APC from the Energy Technologies Institute where she was Director of Operations with responsibility for finance, HR, IT, governance and facilities. Caroline joined the ETI in March 2008, as Head of Finance, to set up the Accounting and Governance functions of the new ETI organisation.

Caroline has more than 20 years experience in a variety of sectors in both operational and strategic roles, particularly in establishing and developing financial frameworks to support business growth and success. Caroline qualified is a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte and has a degree in Commerce from the University of Birmingham.

Caroline takes on the responsibility for all finance and operations functions at the APC.

Julian Hetherington

Julian joins the APC after over 31 years in the automotive industry, initially at Ford then over twenty years at Jaguar Land Rover, most recently as Globalisation Programmes Director where he was responsible for overseas industrialisation programmes.

Julian has a grounding in production operations management following an early focus on industrial automation and controls before moving his focus upstream to senior roles in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, Business Office, Portfolio Programme Management, Corporate Real Estate & Environmental Compliance and, more recently, international expansion which involved overseas assignments in China and Brazil, and has been a passionate advocate for the UK automotive industry when dealing with overseas governments and agencies to promote bilateral investment and trade.

Having been through several complete economic cycles, managing change, business transformation and dealing with the uncertainties and volatility of government policy have been formative experiences and he has significant experience of leading and working within complex cross-functional team structures. He was heavily involved in the processes to manage transition of JLR from Ford to Tata ownership and develop the organisation and its processes to manage growth in capability and scale in the UK and overseas.

Julian was previously Deputy Chair of JLR’s Pension Trustee and Chaired the Investment Strategy Committee.

Jo Evans joined the APC from Alstom where she led the marketing communications team in the rail and energy generation sectors and brings more than 15 years of experience designing and implementing marketing and communications strategies across global organisations.

Jo has held international responsibility at Doncasters Precision Engineering, and British Gypsum, latterly Saint-Gobain, in various roles including campaigns, events, corporate brand and public relations.

Since joining the APC team as the Head of Marketing and Communications, Jo has gone on to join the executive team as Strategy and Performance Director.

Philippa Oldham

Philippa is a Chartered Engineer who thrives on working with a wide range of stakeholders from government, industry and academia to create visionary solutions, challenging existing silos between the sectors.

Previously Head of Transport and Manufacturing at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for six years, Philippa has a great understanding of the challenges facing transport and manufacturing both domestically and internationally.

With experience from the automotive, aerospace and defence sectors Philippa believes the APC can drive investment that we need to equip the UK with the right capability and technology to be at the forefront of pulling innovative low carbon propulsion solutions through to fruition, accelerating economic return.

Through the APC’s stakeholder communities Philippa is looking forward to the opportunity to use her experience and knowledge of the UK’s transport modes and infrastructure to build on the strategy already in place, driving through and accelerating deliverables. This opportunity to incubate collaborations, honing solutions to drive UK leadership in terms of exportable products and services.

Dan is an Engineer with over 20 years of experience in the automotive and power generation industries.

Beginning his career in project management and manufacturing at GEC ALSTOM, Dan has also held senior positions in production at Automotive Products and purchasing and supply chain supply at Delphi Diesel Systems.

Prior to joining the Advanced Propulsion Centre, Dan was the Global Quality Manager at Delphi Automotive Aftermarket Division

At the APC, Dan was responsible for developing the Strategic Business Plan and is now working within the Business Development Team.

Dave OudeNijeweme

Dave has spent over 18 years in automotive companies and consultancies, with a focus on research and development of clean and efficient vehicles.

This included a stint at JLR getting new engines & technologies to market, time at MAHLE powertrain working in low CO2 technology demonstrator projects including a downsized engine, a range extender electric vehicle and a solar-driven Stirling engine as well as running a number of client projects. More recently Dave worked at E4tech, which is a strategic consultancy in sustainable energy.

At the APC Dave is responsible for providing strategic insights into future automotive technologies (road mapping) and how the UK should position itself to benefit most. His remit includes automotive propulsion as well as Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technologies. Currently he is helping to build the supply chain for electrified vehicles.

Danielle Reid

Danny joined the APC from Williams F1, where she was Group Talent Acquisition and Development Manager.  Working as an integral part of the Williams Group Leadership team and Executive, she took a lead role in driving a direct model of recruitment across the group, introducing psychometrics, assessment centres, values based interviewing and redefining the competency framework across the group.  Danny also managed all aspects of the Williams Group training and development embedding ongoing robust development strategies, introducing leadership coaching, insights discovery self-awareness training, 360 feedback and enhanced leadership programmes.

Danny is an experienced and certified leadership coach with Henley Business School and is currently completing her MSc Coaching and Behavioural Change. Danny is an accredited user of a number of psychometric tools including SHL, Insights Discovery and Thomas International.   She also has a degree in Business Studies from Kingston University

Zoe has over 20 years proven commercial experience across industry sectors, in account and sales management. Zoe has built her experience within small SME start-ups and larger global organisations such as Virgin.

For the last 8 years Zoe was a co-founding Director of a Midlands-based company specialising in environmental product design solutions, primarily for the automotive sector. Here her project management skills resulted in a variety of successful projects many of which were grant funded. All focused on both the economic and most importantly the environmental challenges the industry faces.

Her position at the APC allows her the opportunity to bring this experience and understanding of the challenges of competitions with the ability to offer the guidance needed.

Kate Seddon

Kate Seddon joined the APC team with 19 years of global marketing, communications and operations experience across corporate, consumer and B2B environments; working with major brands in construction, manufacturing and higher education. Kate has also worked agency side in the creative and live events field.

Kate has held a number of management roles during her career with the University of Nottingham, Saint-Gobain and Caterpillar, specialising in marketing and communications strategy, campaign management, internal communications and engagement, project management, marketing operations and event management.

Kate has responsibility for the day-to-day running of the APC Marketing and Communications Team and leads the APC’s strategic communication projects.

Josh Denne

Josh is a Physics and Philosophy graduate and joins the team from ACAL Energy where he led technical projects developing large scale energy storage and fuel cell technologies.

As Heads of SME Programmes, Josh works closely with the successful TDAP consortia and is responsible for monitoring and assisting APC supported programmes that take low carbon advanced propulsion technologies through development towards product readiness.

Giles Conway

Giles Conway is a qualified Chartered Management Accountant, who previously headed up the UK Finance Department of Japanese Tier 1 supplier Yazaki (Electronics and Electrical Drive Systems) in Coventry. With the changing focus away from Internal Combustion, he has been involved in several HV/BEV/PHEV projects, as well as more traditional low voltage programmes.

Giles has an interest in streamlining internal financial processes to drive timely and relevant reporting to end stakeholders. He is particularly looking forward to using his strong excel skills to support the team. Prior to working in the Automotive sector, Giles worked for several logistics and distribution organisations both in the UK and Europe.

She was involved in guiding projects from R&D, through their innovation structure and on to the launch phase ensuring delivery on-time and on-budget.

Helena is a key part of the Automotive Transformation Fund, helping the UK transition to an electrified future.

Chris has over 15 years experience in the automotive industry working Johnson Controls Batteries, most recently as Senior Customer Manager responsible for business with two Japanese OEMs in EMEA region.

Chris has seen his job role evolve throughout his career, giving him the chance to gain experience of working with vast array of customers, trade sectors and tasks.

Gareth has more than 35 years experience working in the automotive industry, most recently with Froude Hofmann, as a supplier of advanced vehicle, engine and powertrain test systems. He has held senior roles including Sales & Marketing Director, Technical Director and Business Development Director.

A mechanical engineer by training, Gareth has worked on projects worldwide with OEMs, suppliers (large and SME) research organisations and regulators across the product portfolio of motorcycles, cars and commercial vehicles.

At the APC, Gareth’s key focus is to provide support for SMEs to accelerate the development of technology.

Dan Fung is a Mechanical Engineer turned Programme Manager.

Previously heading up the Programme Management teams at Eminox and UTC Aerospace Systems, he brings both automotive and aerospace experience to the APC. He has been accountable for a range of international projects including research and development, facility setup and new product introduction.

At the APC, Dan is responsible for supporting project consortia in completing their technical and commercial outcomes; the advancement of low carbon technology and creation of an enduring UK supply chain.

Sunil Maher joined the Competitions & Projects team at the APC in mid-May 2018.

Previously, Sunil was Project Manager at the University of Warwick where he was responsible for managing and coordinating an academic research project involving 18 universities. Prior to this, Sunil worked at Coventry University Enterprises Ltd where he managed, coordinated and delivered a range of EU funded collaborative research projects with particular emphasis on SME support, transport, digital media, research and VET projects gathering delivery experience and knowledge of EU funded programmes such as FP7, H2020, LLP, ERASMUS+ and ERDF.

Sunil’s career started in the telecommunications industry where he was responsible for developing global support plans for newly developed products at Marconi Services UK. Sunil has a degree in Electronic Engineering.

Alex started his marketing and communications career at the APC in 2015 as a Press Officer. Since then, he has continued to climb within the organisation taking on the role of Digital and Communications Co-Ordinator and most recently being promoted to Digital Channels Lead. Leading up to this, Alex pushed himself as a freelance videographer, photographer and volunteered as music journalist.

Having a finger on the pulse of the latest digital marketing trends, Alex ensures that the APC is at the forefront of the low-carbon propulsion conversation online.

Jeremy studied Law at university and then went on to work in a variety of specialist areas of the law including criminal, mental health and business & commercial law.

In 2015, he made the switch to project management, working for Axillium Research. At Axillium he supported the bid, set-up and delivery of collaborative R&D programmes across industry and academia with a particular focus on the automotive sector. This included two successful APC bids. Before joining the APC, Jeremy worked at Jaguar Land Rover, working as a project manager on collaborative APC funded projects. There he coordinated bids, helped on the set-up and close down, and ran a live project.

At the APC, Jeremy supports our TDAP team as a project delivery lead. He works with small and micro sized organisations to help them find their feet in the automotive industry, ensuring they are getting the most out of the technology developer accelerator programme.

Aleksandra joins the APC having previously worked as an Internal Recruitment Consultant at the University of Warwick. She holds an MSc in International Business, as well as an MSc in Management. Throughout her studies, Aleksandra worked in the events industry for automotive OEMs including The Volkswagen Group, Jaguar Land Rover, Lotus, and Infinity.

As a Competitions & Projects Delivery Coordinator within the technology and projects team, Aleksandra is responsible for monitoring and reporting on portfolio budgets, supporting delivery of APC Core Competitions, working closely with Project Delivery Leads.

Ileana started her journey by studying electronics, telecom and IT in Bucharest. Following on from this, she completed an MSc in Engineering and Management at Coventry University – focusing her dissertation on supply chain management issues on batteries and implications for EV OEMs.

Before joining the APC, Ileana worked at Aston Martin. There, she worked within R&D with 5 programme teams, chairing daily meetings and supporting the Business Transformation Director with process improvements.

As a National Networks Programme Coordinator, Ileana is involved with assisting with the collaboration between academia, industry and Government. She works closely with the Spokes to maximise opportunities and collate information.

Catherine started her career at the APC in 2017 as a marketing intern. Since then, she has graduated with a BSc in Business Management. After graduating her BSc, she has now re-joined the APC in the Marketing and Communications Coordinator role.

In the marketing and communications team, Catherine is responsible for managing the International events programme, UK events programme and events held in the National Propulsion.

Charlie joins the APC having previously worked as a Data Analyst at a FinTech company. He obtained an MSc in Micropalaeontology and a BSc in Geography from the University of Birmingham and is looking to combine his analytical experience with a passion for low carbon energy solutions.

At the APC, Charlie now works as the Business Planning & Strategy Analyst, co-ordinating the reporting of the organisation’s key metrics and performance indicators.

Having graduated from Loughborough University with a B.Sc. in Economics with Politics, Caroline joined the Cooperative movement and spent her early years building a career path in HR and training within a retail environment.    

She made the move to a leading edge engineering environment in 1999 when recruited to Stewart Grand Prix as their first HR Manager.  Through a series of sales and re-brandings, Stewart became Jaguar Racing under Ford, then Red Bull Racing when acquired by Dietrich  Mateschitz 

Caroline then joined the HR team at Williams Grand Prix Engineering in 2011, through to 2018, providing support as HR Manager for the F1 side of the business, working with a diverse team of HR professionals.  

Overall, some 35+ years generalist HR experience, 17 of which within the Formula One industry, supporting and empowering management and employees to deliver the core objectives of the business.“

Bhavik is the Roadmap Project Manager, responsible for facilitating and delivering high quality industry-consensus technology and product roadmaps for the APC.  

He has extensive work experience in automotive electrification, battery production, high volume e-machine manufacturing, value stream mapping, automotive strategy development, digital simulation methods and has project managed several R&D funded programmes.

Dave was a technical specialist at Ford on advanced powertrain before leaving in 2006. 

After this, he began work as an engineering consultancy and from 2008 has been an MO, MLO and assessor for Innovate and the APC. He has particularly enjoyed being able to “give something back” and make a significant contribution to the industry, especially for SME’s along the way. 

Dave joined the APC to fill the role of an external project delivery lead for our ARMD competition. 

Away from work, he is a self-confessed “petrol head”, owning classic cars and bikes, plus a couple of ¼ mile sprint/ drag bikes. 

His most recent project has been building a new eco efficient house behind his current old bungalow (which will be demolished on completion), putting the cars and bikes have on the back seat. He is also kept busy his six grandchildren.

Doug Erskine

Doug brings over 30 years of finance experience at operational and strategic level in the private, public and not for profit sectors to the Senior Finance Business Partner role at APC where he will support the ATF and ARMD projects.  

Doug most recently worked for the Energy Technologies Institute LLP – a public-private initiative focussing on R&D innovation in low carbon technologies – latterly as Director of Operations where he was responsible for leading the Finance, IT, HR & Business Planning functions. After 11 years at ETI Doug managed the development and delivery of a wind-up plan to take the organisation into a solvent liquidation.  

During his time at ETI, Doug also held the positions of Finance Manager and Head of Finance, contributing to establishing and managing robust financial reporting, governance and risk management as the organisation went through start-up and expansion phases.

Luke Bates has recently completed his BSc in International Economics from Loughborough University. This four-year degree focuses on international trade and includes a placement year, which Luke undertook at ABB.

There he promoted the UK’s Industrial Strategy with a project highlighting the funding opportunities available through collaborative R&D. As the APC’s Automotive Analyst, Luke has worked on this year’s Fuel Cell Technology Indicators and supported other key reports.

Tafadzwa Motsi

Tafadzwa Motsi is a chartered Chemical Engineer with more than a decade of successful experience in innovation and developing new products within both large and small organisations.

His focus and main interests are in areas and on projects which have a positive environmental impact. He has worked on Carbon Capture technologies, developed low cost materials for cleaning waste water during his doctorate studies, and more recently he has been working on biodegradable light-weight-high strength Nano-materials which can be used in a variety of applications. Prior to joining APC, Taf led and managed several projects scaling-up and commercialising the production of nano and micro-materials. 

 At the APC, Taf supports the TDAP team as a Snr Project Delivery Lead. He works directly with small and micro sized organisations to help them find their feet in the automotive industry, ensuring they are getting the most out of the technology developer accelerator programme and helping them accelerate their innovations to market.

Mike Raines

Mike has held key positions for a number of high profile Automakers and Global Tier 1s answering to challenging business, growth and strategy questions regarding product sales, future applications and direction of automotive technologies.

He has over 25 years of experience working in the Global automotive arena and in particular, Germany, China, India and the US with multimillion-dollar brands and start-ups alike. Mike’s understanding of what truly drives invention, financing, engineering, new ideas & concepts, through to a profitable product launch is where he is most at home; he is hoping that this experience will benefit APC and is very much looking forward to being part of the widely recognised and successful APC UK team.

Mike believes it’s how well we connect with the heart and emotion of our industry and its people that will ultimately make a difference in its future accomplishments.

Alex is a Chartered Engineer and Prince 2 accredited Project Manager working for over 10years in automotive OEM’s. Prior to the APC, he spent 6 years leading the integration of software and calibration for Aston Martin’s engine supply cooperation with AMG Daimler. 

Additionally managing large tier one suppliers and in house calibration teams to deliver Emissions, OBD and Driveability targets. He joined Aston Martin in 2009 after graduating from Loughborough University where he also spent time at Vauxhall Motors manufacturing plant as a Body in White Process Engineer building the 5 door Astra.

Deisi joins the APC with over 11 years of experience in the Automotive Industry; working in Quality, Product Development and Project Management.

In previous roles, Deisi managed several cost reduction and continuous improvement projects at Fiat Chrysler, and led the development of body exterior components and coordinated APQP activities at Jaguar Land Rover.

She holds a MSc in Mechanical Engineering, MBA in Project Management and APM Project Management certification.

Rebecca Watson

Senior PR Manager

Rebecca joins APC with 25-years’ experience in PR, journalism, and internal and external communications. She has worked in a number of sectors including energy, healthcare, criminal justice, logistics, and not-for-profits.

She has worked for brands such as FedEx, National Grid, Cadent, KPMG McKesson and LloydsPharmacy and was on the communications advisory group for Police Chiefs’ Council (formerly Association of Chief Police Officers) for 5 years. She has also been involved in managing the media for various high-profile global news stories and supporting submissions to subsequent public inquiries.

Matt Shillito

Matt is a mechanical engineer by training, and after gaining a MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Warwick in 2011, he spent four years at JLR working primarily on active suspension systems including air suspension and hydraulic anti-roll systems.

In his most recent role, Matt worked for consultancy firm McKinsey and Company, helping clients to reduce their costs by focussing on product development and manufacturing topics, working across industries including automotive, electronics, and industrial equipment.

Matt Shillito joined the APC team in January 2021 as a Project Delivery Lead, and is excited to be a part of the effort  to realise the environmental and social benefits from next-generation automotive technology.

Clem joined the APC from an advocacy comms agency, working with a range of clients from European trade associations to corporate brands. A storyteller at heart, he previously trained as a broadcast journalist and continues to enjoy integrating multimedia and creativity into his work.

Ruby spent almost 10 years working within the manufacturing and automotive industry, whilst gaining a Masters in Engineering Management and a Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership.

Her most recent position was as a Technical Sales Manager at Unipart Powertrain Applications, Coventry. She has valuable experience working on a variety of projects; from early research concepts including projects with the APC and other partners, right through to finding production and aftermarket solutions, with a portfolio of OEM customers include JLR, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, McLaren and other specialist low volume manufacturers.

Meera has 3+ years of experience working for multiple organisations, primarily SME’s but has also worked for the Government Economic Services (GES). She holds a Bachelors in Economics and is keen to combine financial ingenuity with a passion for the environment. 

At the APC, Meera manages all claims and finances in the Technology Developers Accelerator Programme (TDAP) Team. She is responsible for all budgeting and forecasting within the programme, she manages claims communication between the Technology Developers and Government as well as leading on Impact Measurement for the programme.

Natalie joined the APC with over 10 years of marketing and communications experience across mostly B2B environments and has worked in a variety of sectors including education, property, publishing and construction. 

Specialising in marketing and communication planning and campaign management, she really enjoys getting to grips with a brand and exploring how to develop, build and fine-tune communications. 

 Natalie has responsibility for leading communications activity on strategic projects including the Automotive Transformation Fund.

Andrea joins the APC after 6 years work experience in digital communications, events and project management with experience spanning across broadcast & digital media, optical and technology industries.

After graduating from Goldsmiths University with a degree in Media and Communications, she went on to build on her customer service background in companies spanning from small organisations through to globally-recognised blue chip companies.

In her most recent role, Andrea worked as a sole marketer for a B2B technology start up where she was responsible for all activity relating to all digital marketing and events, which included conceptualizing, developing  and implementing brand awareness campaigns.

Following a successful career at Ford Motor Company, Ben joined JATO Dynamics as Research Director with responsibility for all aspects of the global research activity, he later joined International Ambulance as CEO working with company founders to establish the brand in the market securing its strong market position. Ben started his own consultancy, Nith Services, in December 2016 to provide strategic and management support.

An experienced leader Ben possesses a strong track record for strategic global delivery. Passionate about innovative and efficient product lifecycle Ben has a strong background in mechanical engineering from design, manufacture to launch.

Working with Entrepreneurs/Founders, Board level roles to operational, business planning and project delivery Ben has helped to lead global growth programs, including two foreign assignments Japan and USA, and specialises in strategy development and vehicle product planning.
