Exploring fuel alternatives for TPS

On the road to electrification, the thermal propulsion system is a key transitional technology while the uptake of electric vehicles grows. Innovation within our thermal propulsion systems has been significant over the last decade to adhere to increasingly tight government legislation. Innovation to reduce the environmental impact of thermal propulsion systems has led to our TPS becoming more efficient and cleaner than ever before.

The TPS Thermal Efficiency Spoke continues to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency and emissions for new engine technology. Going beyond traditional petrol and diesel cycles, they investigate innovative and radical concepts that can revolutionise how the internal combustion engine performs. This comes as a necessity to increase the efficiency of light duty vehicles and heavy duty vehicles, as well as the associated sensors technology, advanced multi-physics simulation and advanced software tools.

The Thermal Propulsion Systems (TPS) Thermal Efficiency Spoke, hosted by the University of Brighton, is a community which takes a hands-on approach at all levels of research and development to improve efficiency and emissions of our future advanced engines. From helping innovators test their technology, to tackling the big challenges alongside OEMs, the Spoke is dedicated to enabling new innovations to progress an iconic technology. This includes understanding the part that future sustainable (non-fossil) fuels could play in transport.

The TPS Thermal Efficiency Spoke also leads the Transport Energy Network (TEN) which is a collaborative network designed to develop a consensus view of pathways to net-zero emissions for challenging applications with high journey energy requirements like heavy-duty trucks and off-highway machines.
