Automotive Transformation Fund – Feasibility Studies Competition
We’re seeking proposals from single organisations or consortiums for business case feasibility studies, through our fifth Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) Feasibility Study Competition.
Successfully awarded feasibility studies will produce a decision-ready business case, in preparation for projects which will develop large-scale manufacturing facilities in the UK. The resulting projects must also support the UK automotive industry in either increasing business confidence in making large-scale manufacturing investments or building electrified vehicle supply chains. Businesses and consortiums registered in the UK can apply for up to 50% government grant-funding between £200,000 and £500,000, from a total funding amount of up to £2 million.
Eligible projects
- open to single applicants and collaborations
- must produce a suitably detailed and reasoned business case through a feasibility study, to include reasons to aid a future investment decision
- start by 1 October 2024 and end by 31 March 2025
- last up to 6 months
- project work must be carried out in the UK and intend to exploit the results from or in the UK

Project criteria
Projects must prioritise on scale–up.
Priority will be given to projects which have particular focus on a circular materials economy. This can include, but is not limited to:
- recycling of critical materials
- design for disassembly and materials recovery
- remanufacturing and reuse of components
We are also interested in receiving applications for:
- specialist cell
- module
- cell to pack
Who are potential manufacturers, keen to explore the business case of the UK, as a manufacturing location for support of UK original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Your project must prioritise scale up and must focus on:
Batteries, including cells (gigafactories)
- cathode materials and manufacturing
- anode materials and manufacturing
- electrolyte
- cell assembly components, including separators
- module–to–pack
- cell–to–pack
Electric motors and drives
- magnet materials and manufacturing
- electrical steel materials and manufacturing
- electrical machine assembly
- drive line components
- assembly and test into complete drive unit
Power electronics
- wide band gap semi-conductors
- sensors
- passives
- power electronics assembly
Fuel cells
- membrane electrode assembly (MEA)
- fuel cell stack assembly
- storage tanks
Recycling
- batteries
- electric motors and drives,
- power electronics and fuel cells (where there is a move towards circular economy, particularly for critical materials)
Sectors in scope can include the supply chain for on and off-road vehicles, agriculture, heavy-duty and mining.
