Intelligent Energy Ltd – ESTHER

Fuel Cells will deliver zero CO₂ emissions in larger cars and commercial vehicles

Emitting only water, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles will become an everyday part of life. The funding provided through the APC will ensure that the ESTHER consortium develops and integrates valuable technology, delivering skills and supply chain advantages for the UK to capitalise on this new technology and unlocks additional R&D spend from UK suppliers. It will also be a key enabler for the transport sector as a whole to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Building the UK’s fuel cell production capability

Project Highlights

  • Develops hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) technology, centred on an evaporatively cooled fuel cell system
  • Designed for use in passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles, where batteries alone cannot deliver the zero carbon emission benefits
  • FCEVs can run all day which is essential for commercial fleets, whilst only needing a 3 minute fill time, at a vastly expanding network of Hydrogen refuelling stations
  • Total project value £22.2 million, with £9.1 million funded through the APC
