European Metal Recycling: Advancing the Circular Aluminium Supply Chain
Transforming the UK aluminium supply chain by creating up to 100% recycled extrusions for use in the automotive industry.
This EMR-led project will transform the aluminium supply chain in the UK, by creating a world-leading scrap processing facility co-located with a low-carbon billet production capability.
Aluminium billets will be made using up to 100% upcycled post-consumer scrap to provide a range of high-strength, impurity-tolerant alloys for the manufacture of structural automotive components, that match or exceed the same quality and performance standards as those achieved from primary material.

Key highlights
- Combines EMR’s aluminum scrap processing expertise with Constellium and Brunel University of London’s alloy development knowledge to produce ultra-low-carbon aluminum billets with strong material attributes.
- Testing by the consortium, including vehicle manufacturer Stellantis, will confirm that these billets can safely outperform primary aluminum in crash structures and battery enclosures with net-zero-carbon potential.
- Total project value £6.3 million, £3.1 million funded by the Department for Business and Trade through the APC.
