ALIVE and demonstrating: Constellium enclosures

ALIVE is a £15 million project, including a £7.5 million government grant through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK.

Standing for Aluminium Intensive Vehicle Enclosures, ALIVE aimed to take a major step with disruptive high-strength aluminium alloys and processing and joining technologies.

Led by Constellium, ALIVE has designed, developed, assembled, and extensively tested aluminium intensive prototype enclosures and full-scale demonstrator enclosures for major OEMs.

Over the course of this project the consortium has seen the development and manufacture of four battery enclosures, two of which are fully tested.

A prototype manufacturing line and digital twin was established by Expert Tooling, and Innoval assessed the impact of design and traceability of materials.

All the partners include:

Constellium, Expert Tooling & Automation, Innoval Technology, BMW, Brunel University, Powdertech Surface Science, Volvo & Warwick Manufacturing Group

Watch this short video from the Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle and Cenex Connected Automated Mobility Show where three enclosures were on display, and hear from the three principle partners on this innovative project.

Constellium has taken the learning from ALIVE into a follow-on collaborative R&D project called CirConAl, which explores aluminium recycling, looking into battery box use case and application.
