SPARKLE will demonstrate laser ignition for hydrogen engines, a breakthrough technology that could transform zero emission vehicles in demanding off highway sectors such as agriculture, construction, and mining. Unlike conventional electrical spark plugs, which degrade quickly under the high pressures of lean burn hydrogen operation, laser ignition can be more reliable, longer lasting, and enables higher efficiency. This reduces maintenance costs and accelerates the adoption of clean engines.
Project highlights:
- If the prototype performs as expected, laser ignition could enable more efficient, reliable operation of hydrogen engines in demanding off-highway applications such as agriculture, construction and mining, helping cut maintenance and support the UK’s transition to net zero transport.
- The project strengthens the UK’s position in advanced photonics and clean power by building capability across UK partners and suppliers, safeguarding skilled roles, and laying groundwork for future export growth.
