Advanced Route to Market Demonstrator

RAM Innovations Ltd – Project VERDE

Project VERDE aims to develop the next generation of automotive powertrain systems utilising highly efficient Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors incorporated into an EV inverter that will demonstrate high-frequency switching.

Lead partner RAM Innovations has combined its ePower module design and manufacturing expertise with Quantum Power Transformation and Russel Industry’s high-frequency switching and system design know-how to deliver an EV inverter that demonstrates significant efficiency, thermal, and EMI improvements.

The electric powertrain industry is now evolving from Silicon to Silicon Carbide (SiC) as the core technology within power modules. However, GaN is inherently a better semiconductor material, and although the technology has some challenges, GaN has the potential to outperform SiC.

Verde addresses some of the challenges associated with GaN, including thermal performance, reliability, and EMI.

Project highlights:

  • Enhanced system efficiency with decreased component size and weight.

  • Delivery of a 400V/60kW GaN inverter demonstrator.

  • Proof-of-concept leading to an exploitable technology capable of addressing the growing global demand for electric powertrain inverters for electric vehicles. A market estimated to be in the region $17bn and projected to reach around $73bn by 2032.
