PHINIA – Torque of Tomorrow: Fuelling heavy machinery beyond diesel
Developing missing link technologies to enable alternative fuel powertrains to decarbonise the high energy usage heavy machinery fleet.
This project led by PHINIA aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of high-utilisation, off-highway vehicles operating in remote locations by developing two key technologies: alcohol-based dual-fuel injection systems and mobile hydrogen fuel storage and filling solutions. By targeting machines with energy demands exceeding 1 MWh/day, the initiative addresses sectors where alternative powertrains are currently impractical.
The consortium partners plan to use physical testing and simulation to create models, which will reduce reliance on physical testing and accelerate design studies. An AI model will also be trained to assess test parts, aiding development and durability testing.
Key highlights
- Multipath decarbonisation strategy
- Developing new fuel injection systems for alcohol-based fuels
- Enhancing hydrogen compressor technology
- Targeting high-utilisation off-highway vehicles
