JLR – RADICAL: Recyclable Advanced Demonstrator for Interior Circularity and Lightweighting
Integration of functionality into an interior structure through innovative joining, demonstrating circularity and reductions in mass, cost and disassembly time.
JLR, WMG, Sanko Gosei and Impact Recycling formed the RADICAL consortium to develop, test and recycle a mono-material interior structural component with integrated functionality. This approach will enable multiple interior automotive commodities to reduce manufacturing emissions, component count, weight, cost, manufacturing and assembly processes, as well as drastically reducing the costs associated with recovering the materials at end of life. The RADICAL project will be a crucial stepping stone in the transformation towards net zero and future EU circularity directives.
Project highlights:
- The component itself will achieve its performance through unique geometric capability rather than complexity.
- It will consist of a single material family with minimal contaminants, with the aim of making materials faster and cheaper to recover in any region in the world, regardless of the separation technology available.
- The manufacturing of such components will require innovative joining techniques which will bring unique capability and investment to the UK manufacturing industry.
