JLR – MOBIUS: AI-powered digital toolkits
Developing AI-powered digital toolkits to optimise car body structures for sustainability, circularity, and material efficiency throughout their lifecycle.
Project MOBIUS is pioneering AI-powered digital toolkits to optimise car body structures for whole-life sustainability and cost.
After batteries, vehicle bodies are the biggest source of ‘point-of-sale’ CO2e emissions, mostly due to material production. Car bodies are not explicitly optimised for CO2e; only half of the input material is utilised, and most high-grade materials are downcycled at end-of-life.
The JLR-led consortium will develop digital tools and net-zero enabling technology for designers to lock-in materially efficient decisions early in the vehicle development process. This will lower body structure emissions by 75% while reducing timescales and boosting cost competitiveness, all while supporting the UK’s wider sustainability strategy.
