Ionic Technologies – CirculaREEconomy
Pioneering sustainable recovery of rare earth elements from end of life, closing the loop for a cleaner, greener circular economy.
This project, developed by an Ionic Technologies-led consortium, aims to establish a cost-effective, safe and robust recycling technology for Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) supply chains.
REPMs are essential for zero-emission vehicles manufacturing, but the Rare Earth Elements (REEs) that are needed to build these are in limited supply in the UK. This project aims to develop the technology that will allow manufacturers to safely extract end-of-life magnets from vehicles, electric drive units, or rotors. By implementing long-loop recycling, this project aims to create a sustainable REPM supply chain in the UK, which could also be beneficial to other industries.
Project highlights
- Develops a sustainable REPM supply chain in the UK
- Immediate offtake by OEMs within the consortia
- Applicable to other industries reliant on REPMs
- Creates opportunity for new chemistry, hydrometallurgy, chemical engineering, and technical roles
- Establishes a centre of excellence in Belfast
