Intelligent Energy, project Archer – Advanced Regulation and Conversion of Hydrogen Electrochemical Reactions

Project ARCHER: delivery of a 200kW+ fuel cell system that is designed to meet the certification and life requirements of heavy-duty (HD) automotive applications.

Lead partner Intelligent Energy is developing a new IE-DRIVE HD fuel cell system by coupling an established core stack design with balance of plant components developed to meet life and certification requirements.

Project Highlights:

  • Building on their IE-DRIVE hydrogen fuel cell product range, lead partner Intelligent Energy has developed a certification-ready fuel cell system.

  • To facilitate this, GEMS Performance Electronics has developed a robust, certification-ready ISO 26262 ECU for fuel cell and other applications.

  • Using X-in-1 principles, Drive Systems Design has developed a DCDC converter, which, in addition to regulating and combining the output from two fuel cell systems, also provides the necessary power supplies for the operation of the fuel cell balance of plant.

  • The DCDC can also apply a variable frequency AC voltage to the outputs from the fuel cells to enable health monitoring via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

This innovative solution offers improved performance and longer life through the integration of optimised components such as the fuel cell coolant pump.
