FluoRok – ENHANCE-FLUOR-BAT: Enhanced Demonstrator Manufacturing Unit for Fluorinated Lithium-Ion Electrolyte Salts
Developing competitive, sustainable, and safe UK manufacturing for lithium-ion battery electrolytes salts, strengthening local supply chains and reducing carbon emissions.
The ENHANCE-FLUOR-BAT project, led by FluoRok, aims to revolutionise the manufacturing of raw materials used for the production of Li-Ion Batteries by advancing a novel, safe, and low-energy process for producing LiPF₆, the key electrolyte component. Current global production relies on toxic hydrogen fluoride (HF) and is concentrated in Asia, exposing the UK to significant supply chain, environmental, and geopolitical risks.
FluoRok’s patented process bypasses HF entirely, using sustainable sources of calcium fluoride (CaF₂) and phosphate salts to create a benign fluorinating agent (“FluoRok-Beta”) that produces LiPF₆ under mild conditions. This innovation enables local, low-hazard, and sustainable LiPF₆ production, cutting CO₂ emissions compared with existing methods.
The project will enhance FluoRok’s process, further improving costs, reducing fossil-fuel dependence, and developing new products to meet diverse customer needs and enable a competitive battery ecosystem in the UK. It will also integrate UK-based suppliers and circular material flows, fostering a resilient domestic supply chain.
Project highlights:
- FluoRok plans to supply LiPF₆ commercially to UK and EU manufacturers, supporting the nation’s transition to zero-emission vehicles and green industrial growth.
