Donut Lab Development – IMoPED: Integrated Motor Power Electronics Drive
Developing a high-performance, integrated in-wheel drive unit for small vehicles.
By combining a motor controller with an in-wheel direct-drive motors, Donut Lab is unlocking the next generation of in-wheel integrated drive units. This enables precise torque delivery and high-efficiency due to a highly optimised motor, controller, and control system designs; all while minimising active material usage. Inboard packaging space is unlocked, allowing smaller vehicles, larger batteries or more cargo capacity. IMoPED will accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles for a cleaner, more sustainable transportation future.
Project highlights:
- Featuring a fully integrated bespoke motor control unit coupled with, and optimised for, the existing 12″ direct drive outrunner permanent magnet synchronous “donut” motors.
- The mechanical, thermal and electrical integration enables enhanced control, lower cost and reduced vehicle-integration complexity while increasing system efficiency.
- IMoPED unlocks the full design space for their motors and controllers, enabling system-level optimisations to maximise range, minimise energy consumption, and active material usage.
