Cummins – IMMERSE: Immersion-cooled Energy Storage for Electrification    

Project IMMERSE develops advanced immersion-cooled battery modules for zero-emission trucks, delivering safer, faster-charging, and longer-lasting performance.

Cummins Electrified Power Europe, part of Accelera by Cummins, is leading project IMMERSE, a UK-based research and development programme running throughout 2026. The project aims to create and test a new type of battery module with immersion cooling technology, designed specifically for zero-emission medium and heavy-duty trucks. 

Today’s electric trucks face challenges with heat management, slow charging times, and reduced battery life. IMMERSE addresses these issues by developing an advanced cooling system that directly submerges battery cells in a special, non-conductive liquid. This approach helps keep the batteries cooler and more evenly balanced, allowing them to charge faster, last longer, and operate more safely than conventional designs. 

Ultimately, the projects supports the UK’s journey towards net-zero transport, helping reduce emissions, lower operating costs for fleet owners, and build a strong domestic supply chain for future battery production. 

Project highlights: 

  • All design, assembly and testing will take place in Milton Keynes, strengthening the UK’s position as a hub for advanced battery innovation. 
  • The project will work with leading UK testing partners to demonstrate the technology at the module level, a key step toward full-scale battery packs for commercial vehicles. 
  • By proving that this technology can deliver higher performance without adding weight or cost, IMMERSE will pave the way for cleaner, more reliable, and faster-charging electric trucks.
