Breathe Battery Technologies – SafeBMS: A Real-Time, On-Vehicle, Safety-enhanced Battery Management System
Breathe Battery Technologies and Potenza Technology are delivering real-time on-vehicle battery diagnostics to enhance EV safety, reliability and performance.
The consortium will build and demonstrate the world’s first battery “early-warning” system that works directly inside a vehicle’s battery management hardware.
The project will combine Breathe’s advanced battery models with Potenza’s automotive-grade electronics to create real-time diagnostic software that can run directly inside standard vehicle control units, giving vehicles the ability to spot early signs of battery stress or degradation – such as lithium plating – before they turn into safety issues or costly failures. This means no extra sensors, no added hardware and no cloud connection required.
Project highlights:
- A working demonstrator proving that EVs can charge faster, last longer and operate more safely when equipped with predictive, in-vehicle diagnostics.
- The ability to predict battery risks as they develop inside the car – something not possible with today’s systems – helping accelerate the UK’s leadership in next-generation EV safety and software.
