BATRI – BATS: Battery Anode to Tonne Scale Production
Batri will demonstrate large-batch production of its high-performance, UK-sourced carbon anode material.
Demand for sodium-ion battery materials is rapidly accelerating, driven by the shift from lithium-ion and LFP technologies toward safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective alternatives. As cell manufacturers seek lower-cost solutions and regional supply chains, sodium-ion cell production is scaling up globally, creating strong market pull for key component materials.
This project showcases a resource-efficient, lower-emission manufacturing process using sustainable precursors. A tonne-scale demonstrator with a digital twin will validate scalability, providing the industry with confidence in the technology’s readiness, performance, and commercial viability for sodium-ion battery markets.
Project highlights:
- Establishing a detailed manufacturing protocol for 100 kg batches and designing a digital twin for future tonne-scale production.
- Offering reduced costs, lower emissions, and improved supply chain resilience by using locally sourced coal instead of biomass.
- Supporting the UK’s underutilised mining sector, particularly in Wales and Northern England.
- Eliminating energy-intensive conversion processes with a new anode synthesis method, paving the way for a more sustainable standard in battery material.
