ALTILIUM METALS – Low Carbon EOL EV Battery Transport Demonstrator

Demonstrating a functioning prototype of its zero emission on-vehicle technology for safe, sustainable and cost-efficient transport of large volumes of end-of-life EV batteries.

Altilium is a UK-based SME focused on building a sustainable domestic supply chain of low-carbon battery raw materials from recycling existing waste streams, including end-of-life EV batteries and production scrap. Through this project, Altilium aim to demonstrate a novel technology for safe, sustainable and cost-efficient transport of large volumes of end-of-life EV batteries.

With accelerating EV adoption and stricter recycling regulations, an efficient and safe collection and transportation system will be critical to maximise reuse and recycling of this growing volume of EOL batteries, supporting the development of a circular economy for EV batteries.

Project highlights:

  • Completion of the technical demonstrator will transition the project from virtual validation to real-world application, laying the groundwork for future commercialisation and market adoption.
  • Delivering a carbon reduction technology, by enabling the capture of residual charge in end-of-life EV batteries during collection and transport by an electric HGV, ensuring zero tailpipe emissions and creating a supplementary power bank to extend the vehicle’s range.
  • By improving the safety and efficiency of transporting end-of-life EV batteries, the project will reduce potential barriers to high collection rates needed to support robust recovery and recycling, thus supporting a circular economy for EV batteries in the UK.
