Four innovation groups for vehicle efficiency, circularity, and sustainability

24 October 2025

A new report by the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) highlights key innovation clusters across four groups for research and development (R&D) in vehicle efficiency, circularity, and sustainability, as well as scale-up and commercialisation endeavours.

The four key innovation groups are:

  • Vehicle structural and optimisation weight
  • Design for circularity
  • Material recovery and closed loop
  • Sustainable material sourcing

Dr Hadi Moztarzadeh, Head of Technology Trends, APC said:

“By clarifying associated R&D opportunities in technologies related to vehicle efficiency, circularity and sustainability, this report provides an insight into building a resilient value chain for the future of the UK automotive industry.

The study a deep dive into themes identified in the 2024 technology roadmaps and tracks them against the European and UK supply chain capabilities within the context of automotive applications. It offers an overview of focus areas and associated strengths, and gaps to guide the industry’s direction of travel, as well as recommendations for strategic investment across the UK automotive industry.”
