HyProMag – REACT-UK: Rare Earth Automotive Circular Technologies for the UK
Aiming to deliver a full circular economy for rare earth NdFeB magnets in the UK from the automotive sector.
The REACT-UK project, led by HyProMag, will develop the technologies to extract magnets from hybrid and electric vehicle drive motors and recycle them into automotive-grade parts, strengthening UK manufacturing capability in a critical resource area.
The project will develop technologies to extract these magnets from vehicles (EMR), process the extracted magnets using a patented HPMS technique (HyProMag, University of Birmingham), the generated NdFeB powder will then feed multiple parts of the value chain (Mkango, LCM) ultimately being remanufactured into new magnets (HyProMag) working with automotive applications to understand benchmarking and design for disassembly to complete the circular loop (JLR).
Project highlights
- Creating a full circular economy for rare earth neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnets in the UK
- Investigation into grain boundary diffusion to increase the coercivity of magnets to meet automotive specifications.
