Advanced Electric Machines – FALCO
Cost-effective forming and connecting of aluminium multi-strand coils in electric machines.
AEM has demonstrated the use of compressed coils in its patented REM-free electric machine platforms for medium-volume applications and is looking to scale its capability to millions of coils per annum to meet future demand. An extension of the voltage range of these coils to \>1000V will be combined with the development of an alternative tooth winding profile to optimise the performance benefits of aluminium coils, thus opening up a wider range of applications for AEM’s electric machines. Project FALCO will bring these capabilities together to develop a flexible, high-voltage and high-volume manufacturing process for this important technology.
Project highlights:
- Scaling its capability to produce aluminium compressed coils at high volume for its patented REM-free electric machines.
- Delivering a process demonstrator that illustrates the process steps and solutions developed, including joining multi-strand aluminium wire and forming tapered coils.
