Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains – OPTIC

High Power Density Integrated Wireless Charging

Increasing vehicle autonomy creates new opportunities for convenience and luxury; automated charging with no driver interaction is a logical progression along this vector and complements future functionality such as self-parking. OPTIC (Optimised Poly-Phase Technology for Integrated/Inductive Charging) delivers a technology step in wireless charging, enabling reduced system cost and optimised vehicle integration, doubling charging power when compared with today’s systems.

This project’s innovative coil technology enables significantly increased power density, which, when designed as a system, can utilise existing onboard power electronics to reduce complexity, cost, and weight. The system will be interoperable with single-phase or poly-phase ground pads.

Project highlights:

  • Capitalising on the desire for convenience with EV charging by automatically charging once parked over a ground pad.
  • Developing a cost-effective, highly integrated system capable of wireless charging up to 22kW, through the project’s novel coil technology combined with innovative system integration.
  • Delivering increased charging speeds by 50-100%, increased area power density from 80-130kW/m2 to ∼250kW/m2 and reduced costs through mechanical and electrical integration.
