Feasibility Studies for Advanced Engines

The APC Thermal Propulsion System – Thermal Efficiency Spoke is planning to award circa £120k in feasibility studies for Advanced internal combustion engines over the FY19/20, expecting to fund 3-6 studies.

The aim of the call is to provide funding for short term projects addressing strategically important challenges for thermal propulsion systems.
It is essential that any proposed research project will:

  • Address research areas which are aligned with current industrial challenges for internal combustion engines as described in the APC technology roadmaps
  • Be led by an academic institution
  • Demonstrate how APC funding will be used to generate proposals for follow-on funding or exploitation
  • Be completed within 12 months
  • Secure match funding of at least 50%
  • Avoid duplication of research already funded by UKRI;

Note that the following research topics are out of scope: electrical propulsion, fuel cell technologies, hybrid technologies relating to the vehicle systems (research focusing on internal combustion technology for hybrid vehicles is in scope)

Research funding from the APC shall be in the form of fixed awards under the EPSRC’s Full Economic Costing model and will be funded at 50% FEC, with be 50% match funded.
