Bus Roadmap

The 2017 bus roadmap reflects the growing importance of air quality and zero emission operating zones on bus manufacturers which is causing a product stratification. A low cost carbon reduction solution is required for semi-urban/rural buses and a practical zero emission bus is required for city/urban operations. Other significant drivers are the potential impact of vehicle connectivity and autonomy on how buses integrate into an intelligent public transport system and how a suitable infra-structure is required to support mass market adoption of battery electric and fuel cell buses.

Commercial Vehicle and Off-Highway

The 2017 commercial and off-highway roadmap reflects advances in hybrid technology and the growing importance of air quality and zero emission operating zones on CV and off-highway manufacturers. Similar to the 2013 roadmap, duty cycles and operating environments play a vital role in determining the powertrain choice. Inner city and light/medium duty vehicles will likely transition into zero emission capable vehicles whereas heavy duty or rural/semi-urban vehicles will require a high efficiency thermal propulsion system with varying degrees of hybridisation. The impact of vehicle connectivity and autonomy on overall fleet efficiency and energy management is also incorporated into this roadmap as well as the infrastructural requirements for mass market adoption of electrified commercial and off-highway vehicles.

Passenger Car

The 2017 passenger car roadmap acknowledges there has been a move from CO2 as the sole driver to improved local air quality and the drive for zero emission operating zones. The “stepping stone” transitional movement between products has been removed, which reflects the view that there are now multiple technology solutions and not just a single future solution. There is also a greater articulation of technology evolution and potential market discontinuities; including the acknowledgment that thermal propulsion systems will transition from the sole propulsion device to being part of a hybrid system. Lastly, the roadmap highlights the impact of vehicle connectivity and autonomy and how this effects vehicle utilisation and ownership models as well as the infrastructure requirement for mass market adoption of xEVs.
