Ashley Roberts OBE

Ashley is head of automotive innovation and technology policy in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in London.
Among his roles he leads the team which runs the secretariat for the Automotive Council and plays an active role on the Council’s Technology Group including developing the business cases for Government support to the Advanced Propulsion Centre and most recently the Connected and Autonomous Vehicles R&D programme.
He sits on a number of committees including the Board of the Office of Low Emission Vehicles, the Advisory Group of Innovate UK’s Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform and the Intelligent Mobility Planning Action and Coordination Team. Ashley is a Director of Cenex, the UK’s Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon Vehicles.
Previously Ashley set up and managed the £100 million Foresight Vehicle LINK Programme and was the policy lead in establishing UK H2 Mobility.
Ashley joined the Department for Trade and Industry in 1991 to run the LINK Structural Composites research programme and subsequently was sector manager for both the steel and non-ferrous metals industries. Previously he worked as a materials scientist for the Ministry of Defence primarily investigating polymer composite and adhesive systems. He joined the MoD having graduated in Chemical Physics at Bristol University.
